It is very amazing to see basketball stars spring up, soar into the air, and dunk the ball. They really never fail to steal the limelight. For sure, they have been working hard on those stunts. How about us, average people, can we do the same? We play basketball, yes, but it seem quite to dunk. The basket seems to be too high. But, good news! We can also do a perfect dunk. We just need to improve some things, especially our vertical jump. Here are tips on how to dunk:

First, ALWAYS warm up before doing a workout. Do some stretching.

Second, start with a basic jumping exercise, squat weight as the most common. From a standing position, bend at the knees slowly with a straight back going lower and lower, and slowly go back up. If you are a beginner, start without weights, and overtime, gradually increase difficulty level. This will help you on how to dunk.

Third, exercise with the jumping rope. It will greatly aid you enhance the power and explosiveness of the legs. It is the basic plyometric exercise.

Fourth, we have mentioned about plyometric exercise. It is a process alternating muscle contraction and relaxation repeatedly. In jumping, it means jumping, landing on the knees with relaxed muscles, and quickly jumping up again from the crouched position. The exercise puts a maximum stress on the large leg muscles. Thus, you will surely have sore legs, but you can get over it as you practice from time to time. This really has a great role on how to dunk.

Fifth, do a calf exercise which strengthens the big upper leg muscle groups and enhances the total jump height. You just need to stand like a ballet dancer – on your toes and down (repeatedly) until it feels burning. Do not pump, just do it steadily and slowly. This will aid you on how to dunk as the toes are the last to leave the ground when you jump.

Sixth, aim to leap the highest; do not just merely jump. Focus. Research shows that persistent focus enhances the endeavor by 10-20% on average.

Seventh, work out moderately. When leg muscles are overworked, your jumping will not improve. More specific tips on how to dunk: do a heavy workout today, then rest or just do light exercises tomorrow. Fix your work out schedules. Separate speed or polymetric exercise days from weight training days. Learning how to dunk is not a rigid, rush training.

Eighth, keep a positive outlook in life. Do not expect to achieve your dream overnight. All athletes started with nothing. They just practiced and practiced perfectly. Ask them. It takes time to develop the dunking prowess. Perform exercises regularly. Adopt it as a habit. Apply the exercises in your daily activities, like when you are home, walk on tip toes rather than on flat foot. Do it for months, even if you gained a spectacular result, continue the habit.
